Hi and Welcome Again. In the following post I’ll try to guide you to perform a step by step installation of IOS-XRv to make it ready for use and a quick integration on GNS3 to start labbing.
enjoy reading.
IOS-XRv On Virtual-Box :
First of all, we assume that you have downloaded IOS XRv (link provided on the previous Post). You’ll be presented with two files:
Once you got the files, go to Virtual-Box to start the installation.
I choose Virtual-box because it has a built-in integration with GNS3 which make it easier to integrate and configure.
On Virtual-box, there are two manners to configure IOS-XRv:
The 1st one consist of a new VM creation based on the disk on VMDK file. I actually tested this method but It seems to me that it had some issues with Vbox , so I’d rather present the simplest and working one, which bring us to the 2nd one via OVA.
To configure IOS-XRv via OVA open Virtual-box and go to file — > import Appliance:
Look for your OVA file :
Hit next, Give your XR a name, check “reinitialize the mac address of all network cards” and hit “import” :
The importation starts and will take less that one minute :
VM Tweaking :
Once the importation is done, we should tweak a bit our VM. Go to the created VM and choose Settings.
On System Tab, lower the memory to 1024 (its enough !!). make sure to uncheck floopy and CD/DVD (you won’t need it).
On Network Tab configure your Host-only adapter as shown :
Hit Ok and here you are, your IOS XRv VM is ready. Lets configure it on GNS3.
IOS-XRv GNS3 Configuration :
Open GNS3 / Edit / Preferences / Virtual-Box :
Note : Make sure to check the Path to VBoxwrapper and test the settings.
Once it’s done, you should go to VirtualBox Guest, Give your XR router a name, refresh the VM list, choose the VM we configured above from the list, change the NICs to 4 and check options as shown:
Validate your edition and go back to GNS3 to drag/drop your XR router:
Start your XR router and console to it:
And VOILAAA you’re done and ready for labs.
I hope it was clear.

HI Taoufik,
Did you face a problem with sending traffic (ex: ping) between a an XRv router and for example a 7200 router?
I followed the exact steps, and even if the two routers are up and connected, I’m unable to ping between the two nodes or see each other in CDP.
Hi Ahmed,
it is actually a known issue on the Vbox integration with GNS3. as a workaround try to ping from the IOS XRv to the second router with a count of 100, then go to GNS3 and remove the link between the 2 routers and put it back again, you’ll see that the ping is ok :).
Hi Taoufik,
I am unable to start this router seems, it has crahsed, Please help me out.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Nigam,
maybe some screenshots of your VM Configuration will help , can you provide it ?
otherwise, try to delete the VM and repeat the install and make sure you have Admin rights (run GNS3 as Admin) and test the Vboxwrapper before adding anything.
i hope this will help.
Taoufik
Hi Taoufik,
I tried to delete current VM and re install problem still persists. I am not able to attach snapshots which I took during my install. Please help
1. Removed VM
2. Imported OVA File.
3. Changed Name and other settings:
a. Selected Boot order with Hard Disk (System)
b. Base memory 1024
4. Network Settings:
a. Enable Network Adapter.
b. Default parameters
5. Tested Virtual in GNS3 successfully.
6. Configured Virtual as per instructions
7. Started XR router in GNS and it crashed again

Hi Nigam,
it seems to me that its memory issue. increase memory to 2048 and your problem will be solved.
a lot of people are having problem with 1Gb mem even tough this is working for me.
kindly
Taoufik BELMEKKI
Hi Taoufik,
I have same issue after increasing memory; someone suggested me to enable visualization @ BIOS but also failed. Would you give me your email id? so that I can send you some snapshot.
I appreciate your help
Cheers,
Sandeep
Hello Sandeep,
I was having the same issue with my machine you need to activate Virtualization Technology (VT-X) on the bios menu. so reload your machine enter bios under advanced configuration you will find this option.
hope this will help
Thanks Younes for your Help. it seems that a lot of people are facing the same issue here.
Thanks for describing and showing steps to Install and GNS3 integration
Hi,
I had the same problem, then I enabled virtualization in the BIOS of my PC. I am now able to run IOS-XR on Windows 7 32bit OS. I allocate about 1,5G RAM to IOS-SR on Virtual Box.
Hi Taoufik,
you run GNS3 in a VM as a guest or in the Host. I mean IOS XRv in Virtualbox as VM and GNS3 a normal application without using VIRTUALBOX.
Best regards,
Hi Hassan,
you should simply run GNS3 and do all the work there. the latest GNS3 has Vbox-wrapper which interact with virtual-box even if its application is not open. thus GNS3 will run the VM created on VBox and give you access to it.
kindly,
Taoufik BELMEKKI
Hi Taoufik,
I just wanna say Hi :).
PS: This post is awesome !
Hi Amine,
its been a long time. thanks a lot buddy.
Thx for the post !

Hi, Taofik!
Do you know the steps how to add another interfaces on XRv?
I want to add another interfaces such as G0/0/0/1, G0/0/0/2, etc..
but I don’t know how to make it works..
If you know it, please share it.
Best regard,
Jemmy
Hi Jemmy,
i had successfully added 2 other interfaces to my router. i’ll try to write a post about this asap.
stay tunned.
Taoufik BELMEKKI
Hi,
My XRv VM has only one Gig interface i.e. gig0/0/0/0 for dataplane traffic apart from the Mgmt interface. I see in one of the post you responded to one saying you have added a few more interfaces to XRv. Can you please help me regarding the same? Appreciate your help.
Thanks//
I can’t get it working. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS + VirtualBox 4.3.10 + GNS3 0.8.6.
No matter what I do (I tried a fresh installation, I increased the memory to 2048 etc) I got the following error:
Missing reboot reason information. Reboot reason will be derived from Kernel signal code !!!
Writing crashinfo.
Anyone with this error?
Dan,
Did it worked?
I am able to start the XRv,but it is crashing,I tried deleting and adding VM as mentioned in forum,Please help.Sandeep I saw you had the same issue, did you able to solve?
Hi and thanks for the great post
I just wanted to say that a memory of 1024 did not work for me , I changed it to 1538 and it worked fine
Regarding the Ping issue it’s not solved till the moment , I did the ping with count workaround but still , did anyone find another method?
Thanks
BR,
Mohammad
Many thanks for the help. I tried it and all went well untill it comes to booting of the router.

Hi Sir,
I try to configure the IOS -XRV to gns3. but the IOS- XRV image is not starting
While starting the IOS -XRV in virtual box. it show me the message
« booting IOS XRv » . and here where it get stuck. it dont go forward
Hi Shah,
it is a normal thing, because the message « Booting IOS XRv » is all that you’ll see on VBox.
follow down the tuto and try to console from GNS3.
best luck

IOS Xrv is started working. But when I am going from IOS XRV to another router is not pinging.
I also follow the step which was mention by you in comment. but still cant able to ping
Hi Hardik,
im glad to hear that it is Working.
regarding the ping issue :
remove the link between your XRv and the other end.
put it back and ping from the XRv with a count of 20.
if it is not a success, remove the link again and reload the XRv VM. once its ready, put it back and your ping should be ok.
i know it sound awfull :S , but its the only workarround.
best of luck.

Hi all,
Following the tutorial, I managed to get booting halfway in GNS3. Then I get stuck with below messages.
I tried few versions of Vbox, running with ample RAM, but on Mac.
RP/0/0/CPU0:Jun 10 12:42:03.348 : ike[228]: %SECURITY-IMP-4-MSG_WARN : (ike_imp_chan_open) /dev/ipsec/imp Successful
RP/0/0/CPU0:Jun 10 12:42:03.618 : ike[228]: %SECURITY-IKE-4-WARNING : You may want to configure a hostname
RP/0/0/CPU0:Jun 10 12:42:03.638 : ike[228]: %SECURITY-IKE-4-WARNING : You may want to configure a domain-name
Any suggestions or thoughts would be greta help !
TIA
/Samir
HI Samir,
i saw those messages many times while loading the XRv VM, but it is only during the initial loading. did you try to leave it a couple of minutes to loads ?? the loading speed is strongly relative to your hardware.
Thanks Admin !
Oh yeas, I left for a very long time.
Tried it on both IMac and latest Macbook pro with 16GB RAM…Else I agree, I think am nearly there, hence my frustration
Once again, many thanks !
/Samir
Using same method, works fine on an old windows machine. So I am suspecting GNS3 conifg for MacOS.
Has anyone managed to get it working on MacOS ?
TIA

First of all many thanks for the tutorial. My problem is that i dont see my XRv vbox machines in gns3 under / Edit / Preferences / Virtual-Box. Path to VBoxwrapper test is working. I also see other junos machines in my vbox but not the XRvs.

Hi! I’ve found the same issue. But after 30secs waiting, i got :

Hi!
Is it possible to work in GNS3 with IOS-XR ? I mean that ping started working after your the advice – the link must be deleted/created and rebooted VM. What about more interesting protocols such as IGP/MPLS/BGP ? I mean that CDP doen’t work – the devices dodn/t see each other. Have you solved CDPs problem ? Have you foung any other problems ?
Thanks.
I will be using UCS Server with VMware for this.

I’ve actually had pretty good lucking using VirtIO for the network driver. Keep in mind IOS XRv has support for KVM virtuilization, which means it has the QNX/UNIX VirtIO drivers natively installed in the VM. I think this may work for others as well. I have not needed to delete and re-add links using this method.

Hi All,
I am running into same issue ping not working, I have IOS XRv running all fine but can not ping any other remote device when connected.
Already tried removing/adding links while running extended ping with count 20 or 100. Also tried restarting the IOS XRv instance with link removed and re-adding the link afterwards.
Any more tips ?
Thanks a lot.
